Mechanical keyboards have evolved since the infamous IBM Model M keyboard days. Now we have Cherry making multiple types of mechanical keys with different type of feedback and tactile feel. Ever since mechanical switches are paired with anti-ghosting support, mechanical switches are a norm for gaming keyboards. Coolermaster, Thermaltake, Razer.. they all got along with the program.
Razer on the other hand wanted to have a custom designed mechanical keys specifically made for gaming for its 2014 range. According to them, since mechanical keys are primarily designed for typists, its only make sense to make custom keys emphasizing for gaming use. They designed and engineered with two types of mechanical switches: Green and Orange. The green keys are designed for tactile and clicky noise with 50g actuation force. Razer Orange switches also have tactile but is made for silent use, with 45g actuation.
The one that I am reviewing is the green variant. On the plus side, Razer is not keeping these keys as ‘exclusive’ as they wish to create an open source environment for other companies to adopt these gaming-grade mechanical switches. Will other manufacturers adopt these mechanical keys? That’s a tale for another day. Other features that are present are programmable macro keys, individually backlit keys, easy access media keys, up to 10 key roll over, audio jacks and a USB 2.0 port towards the right.
